Explanation:
The shortest route from Egypt to the land of Canaan was through the land of the Philistines (v. 17). The Philistines occupied the Mediterranean coast, connecting the Palestinian region to the Egyptian mainland. According to historians, the Philistines were the most advanced in iron technology among the nations at that time. Israel, which had not yet become a unified nation, was no match for them in battle. If a conflict were to arise while passing through Philistine territory, there was a high chance that the Israelites would retreat back to Egypt. That is why God led them by “the desert road toward the Red Sea” (v.18). This marked the beginning of their 40-year journey through the wilderness.
As Moses led the people out of Egypt, he took Joseph’s bones with him (v.19). This was following the oath Joseph had made the Israelites swear over 400 years earlier before his death (Genesis 50:24–25). They set out from Sukkoth and camped at Etham, on the edge of the wilderness (v.20). God went ahead of them “by day in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night” (vv.21–22).
Meditation:
Israel’s forty-year wilderness journey is often used as a metaphor for the journey of faith. The process of being delivered from slavery in Egypt and journeying as free people toward their final destination, the land of Canaan, is similar to the Christian life—living as children of God after being freed from bondage to Satan and sin. Just as the Israelites were saved through the blood of the lamb, believers are saved through the blood of Jesus Christ, the eternal “Lamb of God.”
For believers, this world is like a wilderness. Our ultimate destination is the Kingdom of God. God blocks the shortcut and leads us through the wilderness because there is something He intends to accomplish during that time.
After rescuing Israel from Pharaoh’s grasp, God guided and protected them by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night. In the same way, those who are saved by the blood of Jesus Christ are guided and protected by the Holy Spirit. Just as the pillar of cloud and fire never left the Israelites, the Holy Spirit has never left believers. He is always with us.
Thus, the journey of faith is to walk with the Holy Spirit in this world and follow His guidance. This journey includes challenges, tears, and failures—but it also brings joy, triumph, and a sense of mystery.
Prayer:
Today, I walk this wilderness road with You, Lord. Because the Holy Spirit is with me, I run with joy even on the narrow path. Please guide me until I reach my eternal home. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Discussion Questions for Children & Youth:
Key Point: God doesn’t always lead us on the easiest or fastest path, but He is always with us, guiding and protecting us every step of the way through the Holy Spirit, just as He led the Israelites with a cloud by day and fire by night.
- For Preschool-Elementary
- Have you ever taken a longer way to get somewhere? Why do you think God sometimes leads us the “long way”?
- What do you think of a cloud and a fire that looks like? How would that make you feel?
- Who helps guide you and protect you today, like the clouds and fire guided the Israelites?
- For Youth
- Why do you think God didn’t take the Israelites through the faster Philistine route, even though it made more sense?
- How do you recognize the Holy Spirit’s guidance in your life today, especially when things don’t go as planned?
- What does it mean for you personally to “walk through the wilderness with God”? Where in your life do you feel God asking you to trust Him more?
