Explanation:

After concluding his teachings, Jesus tells his disciples to go to the other side of the lake (verse 35). It was evening. The opposite side of the lake, across from Capernaum, was a region inhabited by Gentiles. In the earlier part of his ministry, Jesus focused his activities near Galilee, but in the latter part, he expanded his ministry to Gentile regions. This was because the Gospel also needed to be shared with the Gentiles.

Due to its geographical conditions, the Sea of Galilee was prone to sudden squalls. As the disciples took Jesus with them to cross to the other side of the lake, it became night (verse 36), and a strong wind began to arise. The disciples rowed against the wind, but during this time, the waves surged, and water began to fill the boat (verse 37).

At that time, Jesus was sleeping at the stern (the back of the boat). The disciples woke him up, saying, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are about to die?” (verse 38). Their words, “about to die,” suggest the dire situation. Jesus got up, rebuked the wind, and commanded the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” (verse 39). Then, the wind died down, and the sea became completely calm. It appears the wind and the sea understood and obeyed his words.

Once everything became calm, Jesus said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (verse 40). The disciples had already witnessed Jesus’ power on multiple occasions. Yet, despite having him with them, they were overcome with fear and terror in the storm, forgetting who he was. They whispered among themselves, “Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (verse 41). It was clear they still did not fully understand who Jesus truly was.

Meditation:

Chapters 1 through 3 detail the early phase of Jesus’ ministry in Galilee. After completing this record of his initial activities, Mark includes five parables to help readers understand what God is accomplishing through Jesus. Beginning with Mark 4:35, the focus shifts to the latter phase of Jesus’ ministry. During this period, Jesus extends his ministry to the Gentile regions east of the Sea of Galilee. Additionally, Jesus’ power in healing, casting out demons, and performing miracles becomes even more evident.

The story of the storm occurred as Jesus was on his way to the Gentile region. While sudden squalls on the Sea of Galilee were common, this particular event carries a deeper meaning. The fact that a severe storm arose on the way to Gentile territory suggests that the mission to the Gentiles would not be easy. Whenever the Gospel enters a land for the first time, it often faces strong resistance and rejection. This is because Satan struggles to retain control over his dominion, refusing to yield without a fight.

To the disciples, who were frightened by the wind and waves, Jesus asked, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (verse 40). Here, “faith” refers to their belief in Jesus’ identity and his power. They would not have been so fearful in the face of the storm if they had remembered who Jesus was and how powerful he had shown himself to be during their time together. After the storm was calmed, instead of asking, “Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” the disciples should have realized, “We forgot that the Lord is with us!” They should have been ashamed of their lack of faith.

When we accept Jesus Christ as Lord, he dwells within us. As he promised, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me” (Revelation 3:20). In our life’s journey, sudden storms can arise at any time, especially when we obey the Lord’s commands. In those moments, we must remember the Lord who dwells within us. When he becomes the Master of our lives, we can overcome any hardship or adversity.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for coming into my life and becoming my Master. Yet, I often forget your presence and try to live as the master of my own life. In those moments, you allow trials and hardships that draw me back to you; I am grateful for that. Even so, I ask that you help me remember and always walk with you. Then, I will not endure suffering in vain. Please help me not to fear the trials that come with following your will. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
