Explanation:

Mark introduces a few more parables, one of which is the “Parable of the Lamp.” The “measure” (verse 21) refers to a vessel used to measure grain. No one lights a lamp to cover it with a bowl or hide it under a bed. The purpose of lighting a lamp is to illuminate a dark space. Once lit, it is customary to place the lamp in a high position. Jesus adds, “For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open” (verse 22).

‘What is hidden’ and ‘what is concealed’ may refer to Jesus’ identity or the mystery of God. While Jesus is currently veiling his identity, it will eventually be revealed. Similarly, though it may seem hidden now, God’s reign will ultimately be made known. Jesus then emphasizes, ‘Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear’ (verse 23).”

Another parable is the “Parable of the Measure.” The “measure” (verse 24) refers to a smaller vessel than the “bowl” previously mentioned. The “you” in this verse refers to the disciples. The contents being measured represent revelation or understanding. The phrase “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you” means “The extent to which you understand will determine the portion you receive.”

‘It will be measured to you—and even more’ means that God will grant you a greater understanding. Verse 25 applies the principle of ‘the rich to get richer, and the poor get poorer’ to spiritual revelation. Those who understand God’s revelation will continue to grow in their understanding, while those whose hearts are darkened and fail to grasp it will sink further into spiritual darkness.”

Meditation:

Riddles or nonsensical puzzles often seem absurdly simple once the key is revealed, yet they are entirely baffling until that clue is grasped. Trying to solve such problems without a clue can feel like groping in the dark, leading only to greater confusion. However, even someone in such a state can develop a sense of solving these puzzles through persistent effort. Their problem-solving ability improves significantly once that sense begins to grow.

This is why Jesus referred to it as “the secret of the kingdom of God” and taught about God’s kingdom in parables. For those trapped in a materialistic worldview, God’s reign remains hidden and obscured. One can only perceive God’s unseen hand at work by acknowledging God’s existence and recognizing the spiritual realm that transcends the physical and material. This is what it means to have the eyes of the heart opened and the ears of the heart attuned. God reveals more and more to such people, allowing them to see and hear the works. In contrast, those whose hearts are blind, and ears are closed are driven further into spiritual darkness.

The same event or object can evoke vastly different responses: one person proclaims, “God has done this!” while another asks, “Where is God in all of this?” The first person has discerned God’s hand at work within the physical world. In contrast, the other person judges based solely on the material world. Ultimately, this difference comes down to the worldview one holds. For those living with an atheistic worldview, no amount of evidence will convince them. On the other hand, those who acknowledge God’s presence can see His hand even in the smallest details.

Prayer:

Lord, wash my heart with the Holy Spirit. Open my eyes to see your gentle hand at work. Open my ears to hear your subtle voice. Help me to experience your touch more often and more closely in my daily life. Grant me the sensitivity to discern your voice resonating in my heart. I hope and long for the day when the kingdom of God will be fully revealed. Let me live out heaven here and now with that faith. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Discussion Questions for Children & Youth:

Key Point: Jesus’s parables reveal the importance of spiritual discernment and the openness of the heart to perceive God’s work. While God’s kingdom may seem hidden to those with a materialistic worldview, those who seek Him with faith will open their spiritual eyes and ears, enabling them to experience His presence and work in every aspect of life. Our worldview shapes whether we see God’s hand or remain blind to His work.
