- Key Teaching Points for Children:
- Jesus’ Mission Was Bigger Than Miracles
Jesus didn’t come just to heal sickness or perform miracles to impress crowds. His main purpose was to bring spiritual healing by saving people from sin and reconciling them to God.
- People Were Drawn to Miracles, Not the Message
Many people followed Jesus because of His miracles rather than his message. Jesus knew that miracles alone wouldn’t bring lasting faith—they could only point to God’s kingdom. His goal was not to gather a crowd who wanted Him to fix their problems but to invite people into a life-changing relationship with God. By asking the healed leper to stay silent, Jesus was helping keep the focus on God’s message rather than creating a spectacle.
- Jesus hid his identity because he wanted people to understand that his mission wasn’t to be a political king but the Savior of the world. He came to proclaim God’s kingdom of love, forgiveness, and salvation—not to gain fame or political power.
- Application: Sometimes, like the crowds, we focus on what Jesus can do for us instead of who he is. But when we understand that Jesus came to change our hearts and give us eternal life, we can shift our focus from temporary blessings to a deeper relationship with him.
- Jesus’ Mission Was Bigger Than Miracles
Explanation:
One day, a man with leprosy approached Jesus and begged to be healed (verse 40). In those days, “leprosy” referred not only to Hansen’s disease but to various incurable skin conditions. Leprosy was seen as a sign of God’s judgment (Numbers 12:10), and those with the disease were considered “unclean” and forced to live in isolation (Leviticus 13). Because of fear of contamination, people avoided lepers and believed that touching them would make them unclean as well. Despite the risks, this man took a bold step by leaving the isolation area and approaching Jesus—a dangerous move that could have led to him being attacked or stoned.
But instead of turning him away, Jesus responded with compassion. Jesus reached out his hand and touched him (verse 41). Jesus didn’t need to touch him—his word alone could have healed the man. But he chose to touch him because he “felt compassion” for him. The Greek word splanchnizomai used here describes a deep, gut-wrenching empathy. Jesus felt the man’s pain and isolation in his own heart. People must have been shocked—how could someone so holy touch someone so unclean? But Jesus wasn’t concerned about becoming “unclean.”
At Jesus’ command, the man was instantly healed (verse 42). According to the law, anyone healed of a serious skin disease had to be examined by a priest and follow certain procedures to be officially declared clean (Leviticus 14). Jesus told the man to do this right away so he could return to his family and community (verses 43-44). He also warned the man not to tell anyone what had happened. Jesus didn’t want his identity as the Messiah to spread too quickly because he knew it would make his mission difficult.
However, the man couldn’t contain his joy. He told everyone what Jesus had done for him. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter towns openly. He had to stay in remote places, but even there, people kept coming to him (verse 45).
Meditation:
As Jesus continued his ministry, people began to realize who he truly was—the Messiah, the Son of God. Yet, Jesus tried to keep his identity hidden until the right time. Whenever evil spirits or people he healed recognized him, he told them to remain silent. But even when he asked for silence, those who experienced his grace couldn’t keep quiet. News about him spread quickly.
Why did Jesus want to keep his identity a secret? It becomes clear later in the Gospel. Jesus didn’t come to gather crowds through miracles or political power. His ultimate mission was to fulfill the role of the “Suffering Servant” who would bear the sins of humanity. His power to heal and cast out demons revealed that he was the Son of God, but those miracles were never meant to build earthly power or armies.
Jesus knew that if the people fully understood he was the Messiah too soon, it could disrupt his mission. The Jewish people believed the Messiah would lead a political revolt to overthrow the Romans and establish a new kingdom. They were ready to rise up and fight for such a leader. If word spread that Jesus was the Messiah, the people could have started a rebellion, forcing him into a political role he did not come to fulfill.
Instead, Jesus carefully revealed his true purpose—to proclaim the good news of God’s kingdom and to prepare his disciples for what was to come. He knew he would eventually be handed over to the authorities and crucified, but until then, his mission was to preach, heal, and show people the heart of God.
Despite his attempts to stay hidden, his words and actions revealed his identity to those with eyes to see. Just as no one can fully hide a bright light, Jesus’ identity as the Savior couldn’t be completely concealed.
Prayer:
Lord, we confess that sometimes our hearts are like the crowds in this story. We seek you not to know you more, but to have our wishes fulfilled through your power. This shows that we still don’t fully understand who you are. Open our eyes to truly know you—not for what you can do for us, but for who you are. Help us to surrender ourselves fully to you, not for our benefit but for your glory. Amen.
